JOHAN GRIMONPREZ: DIAL H-I-S-T-O-R-Y

Buckle up for dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y, the acclaimed hijacking documentary that eerily foreshadowed 9-11. We meet the romantic skyjackers who fought their revolutions and won airtime on the passenger planes of the 1960’s. By the 1990s, such characters apparently are no more, replaced on our TV screens by stories of state-sponsored suitcase bombs. Director Johan Grimonprez investigates the politics behind this change, at the same time unwrapping our own complicity in the urge for ultimate disaster. Playing on Don DeLillo’s riff in the novel MAO II: ‘what terrorists gain, novelists lose’ and ‘home is a failed idea’, he blends archive hijackings with surreal and banal themes including fast food, pet statistics, disco and his quirky home movies. David Shea wrote the superb soundtrack to this roller coaster through history, best described in the words of one hijacked Pepsi executive as: “running the gamut of many emotions: from surprise to shock, to fear, to joy, to laughter and then again, fear.”

KERRY TRIBE - HERE & ELSEWHERE

In Here & Elsewhere, two synchronized videos are projected side by side, creating a vertical seam where they meet. What might be called the project’s "narrative" revolves around an interview between an older man who remains off camera (British film critic and theoretician Peter Wollen) and a thoughtful ten year old girl (his daughter Audrey). Periodically the visuals cut away to quotidian interior shots of the girl at home and exterior locations in and around Los Angeles. Although the video is structured as a loop, the questions the girl is asked trace a series of themes, each of which builds on the preceding dialogue. As the interview unfolds, their conversation touches on history, memory, intersubjectivity, temporality, epistemology and photography. Wollen’s questions are loosely adapted from FRANCE / TOUR / DETOUR / DEUX / ENFANTS (1978), an experimental video series made for television by Jean-Luc Godard and Anne-Marie Miéville. The relationships that emerge between the images on either side of the central vertical seam serve as a structural score for ideas addressed in the interview, such that the continuity, friction, gaps and overlaps that result from their simultaneity underscore the girl’s desire to speak a coherent articulation of time, space, image and identity.

MADS TEGLERS - LOOKING FOR EVA

Looking for Eva is the first book from MTHM Books. The book brings together 41 photographs of actress/model Viktoria Winge’s search, for her deceased grandmother’s history. Depicting a mysterious young girl moving through a magical landscape of shifting realities, the life of the grandmother is revealed through paintings and photographs and shows a universe not unlike Viktoria’s own. Looking for Eva illustrates Copenhagen based photographer Mads Teglers interest, in documenting peoples lives by changing the plot, in order to create a new narrative. The photographs were first shown at Preus Museum in Oslo, Norway.

SPHERES MAGAZINE MELANIE BONAJO`S BY Philippe Karrer

The publication Spheres is the creative documentation of a close collaboration between an artist and the editor, graphic designer Philippe Karrer. Every issue is dedicated to a young artist and their work, in each case exploring character, surroundings, every-day life, inspirations and ideas using unconventional innovative formats so as to create a different, more visual approach and understanding of the artist and his or her work. The focus lies on what is important to the artist during the time period of working together for the publication, hereby capturing a certain essence of the artists work at the moment. Not only can the reader dive in to the artist‘s world, receiving li ttle personal snippets of the life in and around his or her art, but also (and perhaps even more importantly) — how the artist chooses to present things in the publication gives the reader an idea of his or her whole artistic sphere. For this first issue of Spheres, Philippe Karrer has invited Dutch artist Melanie Bonajo to present herself and her work. An image archive to show Bonajos inspirations, a visual interview as a dialogue between editor and artist and text contributions by Annelies Blijveld, Jaimey Hamilton and Joël Vacheron make up this first issue of Spheres.
